Weather – The first benefit of shooting in a studio rather than out on location is you don’t have to worry about the ever changing weather forecast when scheduling your shoot. You’re not in any danger of being washed out or having to wait until the sun dips behind the clouds while you rush for a take before the sun reappears and blows out your image. The studio gives you the confidence that no external factors will stop you from making your shoot run smoothly.
Lighting – Lighting in a studio is a dream as you are in a controlled environment, you don’t have to spend time counteracting big windows, fluorescent overhead lights and rigging lighting in areas that aren’t set up to take heavy equipment. A studio will be set up for your needs and will have multiple areas to rig lighting to achieve your desired ‘look’ with ease.
Accessibility – Studios usually will have specific areas designated for loading kit into the space whereas locations can be much trickier as every location is different and may not be accessible by car depending on how remote the location is.
Sound – Recording sound in a studio is a whole lot easier than when out on location. Studios are usually sound proof or have a good amount of soundproofing installed which allows you to record clear audio without issue. On Location you are constantly fighting the elements, traffic noise, passers by etc. to try and capture clean audio.
Privacy – Privacy is often an overlooked benefit when it comes to shooting in a studio, you can control exactly who has access to your set and won’t be interrupted by curious members of the public constantly approaching your team to see if Tom Cruise is filming something in their area.
