Hybrid events: pandemic trend or here to stay?

During the Covid-19 pandemic, the term ‘hybrid’ became all the rage, from hybrid working through to hybrid events. We worked on a fair few hybrid events during this time – but what exactly is a hybrid event and are they here to stay?

Hybrid events are all about offering a degree of flexibility to delegates and speakers – whilst there is still a physical event at a venue, some delegates and speakers may opt to watch or present remotely. This opens up a whole array of possibilities – no longer do you need to fly specialists in from all over the world to show their findings, you can reach much wider audiences and the best bit? Everyone can still interact as if they’re in the same room.

Hybrid events use tools such as Zoom and live streaming services to connect everyone up; much like video interviews we’ve been used to seeing on news programmes for many years now. By taking this approach and doing it well of course – you can produce a really slick event with high turn out, high levels of engagement with less people on the ground at the event which offers savings in return – not to mention the environmental impact. An example is a hybrid medical conference we produced in 2020. There were people in the room watching and presenting, but there were also pre-recorded videos from presenters played in the room and out onto a live stream followed by live Q&A sessions with the presenter. The presenter could hear the room and the room could hear and see the presenter. The viewers online could see and hear both.

In a nutshell, it would seem absolutely bonkers to not take this new trend forward. They’re a little more complicated to set up, but the benefits are ten-fold.
