Magic Goes Wrong is a hilarious show from the creators of “The Play That Goes Wrong”, Mischief Theatre, combined with the legendary talents of Penn and Teller.
We were approached to produce the new trailer for the show’s UK tour. Conveniently, the tour started in our home city of Leicester, at Curve Theatre. Usually when producing EPKs for theatre, there is time to work directly with the company, set up shots and produce something from scratch with full control. Due to the pandemic and theatres only just reopening, we did not have this time available and so we recorded the full dress run of the show.
Having only seen an archive recording of the show, we needed to be fully prepared to capture as much as possible to pull a trailer together. In order to do this, we used three cameras consisting of two tracking mid-close shots and one locked off wide shot. Each operator used talkback to communicate what they were capturing at any one time to ensure we had as much coverage as possible to work with.
Once the edit was signed off, we produced a range of deliverables for usage on multiple platforms including a normal 16×9 version, a square version, a portrait version and shorter cuts for use on pre-roll ads.
Considering we had one shot of capturing the show, we’re pretty happy with the end results which have now been seen over 10,000 times online.
At Crosscut, we provide a range of services for theatres including archive recordings, hybrid packages, live streaming and EPK production. If you have a project you’d like to discuss with us, please feel free to get in touch!
