We were really excited to be asked to work with the creative team from Simple 8 Theatre Productions on their subsidised musical production of Moby Dick which was peppered with sea shanties.
We initially went to their rehearsal space in Waterloo, London to capture some rehearsal content and interview some of the cast and creatives. It was great to capture the show coming to life and hear from the company about the show.
In the afternoon, we all head to Wilton’s Music Hall, a beautiful grade II listed building which is billed as the oldest grand music hall in the world. It was the perfect backdrop for the production and this visit allowed us to produce some visually stunning music videos with the cast as they performed some sea shanties on stage.
We had a very small amount of time to produce this content and so we worked closely with the team at the venue to get the right lighting state for our vision before starting to shoot. We wanted the music videos to have a ‘real’ sound, and so by leaning into the hall’s sublime acoustics, we recorded a take of each shanty using a stereo pair of condenser microphones as well as a few radio mics on the instruments.
We then used this recording for playback for each subsequent take to ensure we had the same tempo for sync in the edit.
