Pirates love underpants is based on the book by Claire Freedman and Ben Cort, adapted by Brad Fitt and directed by Cara Nolan.

For the second year in a row, we volunteered our time and partnered with Curve Theatre to deliver a very special on demand version of their family Christmas show for the children and families who use Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People.

Crosscut first started working with Rainbows Hospice over 10 years ago. It’s always great to give something back to such an important charity, and knowing that the children and young people will be able to access the performance is incredibly special. As well as watching the performance either at home or on the big screen in the hospice, Curve also sends out sensory packs to make the performance even more immersive.

We filmed the show twice – the first time was essentially a camera rehearsal in order for our operators to learn the show, before recording it for a second time for the final version.

To ensure the video element of the experience was as interactive as possible, we filmed the show from three different angles in front of a live audience before filming a number of set ups shots separately. These set ups allowed us to film sections of the show where the cast speak directly with the audience, but with them speaking directly down the camera to the viewers instead.

These set up shots also allowed us to create a trailer for the show to help promote it for the theatre as well as affording us the time to create some relaxed performance assets. These assets were uploaded for people to watch ahead of the show to better understand the characters and to reassure audience members that they are just acting and it’s not real.

Many productions will now introduce the cast at the top of the show for this reason, however using video is an innovative way to allow people to watch in their own time and may benefit the sale of tickets.
