A couple of months ago, you may have seen us wandering the streets of Leicester with a rather familiar face…
We were honoured to work with the legend of musical theatre himself, Andrew Lloyd Webber, to produce a series of VTs for Curve Theatre’s production of ‘The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber’. The production took on an almost autobiographical approach, with Andrew appearing on screen throughout with anecdotes about his music over the years. This was then backed up with an extraordinary company who performed to a live audience at Curve across the month of June.
The VT’s were filmed at the theatre and around the city, putting a local spin on the whole narrative for Curve’s audience. It was a two camera shoot, using a steadicam, crane and dedicated sound recordist.
We worked with Curve’s artistic director, Nikolai Foster to edit the VTs ready for the opening performance.
Once this element of the project was delivered, we were asked to also film the show for archive. We film a lot of theatre archives at Crosscut, however with Curve’s current ‘in the round’ configuration to aid social distancing, this required a larger team and more cameras than usual. To ensure we got the best coverage, we used a total of 6 cameras to capture the performance. This consisted of two locked off wide cameras (from each side of the stage) and 4 operated close up cameras which were able to track the action on stage.
We’re extremely lucky to have an amazing team of freelancers and relationships with hire companies. This allows us to be extremely agile and pull off productions of this scale at relatively short notice.
It was great to be back in the theatre with a live audience again, and even better to play a small part in bringing this first live show in 14 months to Curve’s stage.
