Video dimensions and their purposes

When producing a video with us, as part of the pre-production process we’ll find out where the video is being used. This will affect the size of the end deliverable, or result in us delivering multiple versions of the final edit with different dimensions. The reason is simple – different platforms favour different dimensions.

This changes all the time but generally speaking you have platforms like Instagram TV and TikTok who require portrait video, otherwise known as 9×16. It’s true that Instagram TV do also accept 16×9, or normal widescreen, but the user interface is designed around portrait video and so it’s generally better to stick to that.

Speaking of 16×9, that’s your normal video from places like Youtube. It’s landscape, widescreen video content. Social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter and instagram will all accept 16×9 video, however square, or 1×1 is often preferred, especially for Facebook ads and Instagram feeds.

When I say things like 16×9, 9×16, 1×1, I’m talking about the shape, or aspect ratio. The dimensions are then attributed to that aspect ratio, so for example 1920×1080 pixels and 1280 by 720 pixels are both a 16:9 aspect ratio, but one is high definition and one is not.

For square video, Instagram prefers video content to be 1080×1080. This is an easy one to see how the aspect ratio 1:1 is attributed to it.

As I said earlier, these requirements and algorithms are constantly changing which is why we always keep on top of trends to ensure you’re getting the most from your video content, regardless of where you’re displaying it.
