Between the team at Crosscut Media, we’ve been providing live streaming services for 5 years now. When Kylie and her team for the UK Academy of Wedding and Event Planning approached us to produce a live webcast for their trend report pre-launch event, we happily took it on. This stream was the most complex we have ever produced, and as this one acted as a pilot, we have our fingers crossed that it’ll be the first of many.
Our first conundrum was that of acquiring a robust, high speed internet connection. With the studio we were using being based in Pudsey, Yorkshire, we ended up bringing in a 4g network of our own. This gave us upload speeds in excess of 15mb/s, plenty to run a stream on.
The stream was to include 3 guests and so we also brought in and installed a 4 way wireless microphone system along with 4 cameras, an ATEM switcher and a Mac Pro running Wirecast to allow us to encode the stream. The stream was due to go out to 5 Facebook pages and a Youtube channel simultaneously, so we partnered with the guys at Wowza. Their network allowed us to seamlessly connect our stream coming from a small village in Yorkshire to a worldwide audience with ease.
Our final hurdle was brining in 2 guests via Skype. In order to achieve this, we brought two laptop sources into our switcher and split the audio signal. One feed went to our main mix to go out on the stream and the second into a wireless earpiece worn by Kylie so that she could hear her guests. We then had to send Kylie’s microphone into the Skype laptops to complete the set up.
The stream went out smoothly and we were happy with the outcome. Here’s to many more! To find out more about our live streaming and webcast services, visit our live streaming page.
