We’re very lucky at Crosscut to have a huge arsenal of ever improving video production kit. But having the best kit doesn’t mean that we can automatically make incredible video content. Sure, having great kit and more importantly the right kit helps enormously but without a good concept, a good creative brief or vision, that kit isn’t going to work on it’s own.
I always like to draw parallels between video production and a more traditional profession. Take plumbing for example. Picture a plumber coming to your house to fit a radiator. Except they’re not actually a plumber, they just have a van that says ‘plumber’ and all top notch tools. They might get the job done, but will it be safe and functioning? Who knows. Will it do exactly what it’s designed to do? Who knows. How long will it take them to install it? Probably quite a lot longer than a trained plumber.
Compare that with a qualified plumber coming. They have the knowledge but they’ve got a load of cheap tools from the middle aisle of Aldi. They’ll get the job done, and no doubt they’ll get it done in a way that results in a safe and functioning end result. They didn’t have the right tools though, so it took them twice as long to do it and the finish is a little rough.
Finally, picture a plumber who had all the best tools and the knowledge. Obviously, they’re going to do the best job and do it efficiently because they know exactly what they’re doing and they have the best tools for the job.
Let’s now take that analogy back to video production. Someone with thousands of pounds worth of kit but no knowledge isn’t necessarily going to produce a great video, and they’re certainly not going to do it quickly. Someone with a good knowledge of video production but with second-rate tools is more likely to make a good video but it could technically be better and it’ll probably take them a while to get it to a good standard. Obviously that’s ok for some people and for some types of content.
Finally, someone who has a good knowledge of video production and the right kit is going to produce something exactly to spec and far more efficiently than anyone else. It seems like a really obvious thing to point out, but make sure you check out portfolios before commissioning any video production work to make sure they’re a good fit with your requirements.
