‘The production fuses state of the art live creative captioning and BSL performance with traditional theatre craft and live music for a fully inclusive and accessible piece of theatre.’ Written by Ross Willis, and directed by Sally Cookson.
We were commissioned by EMG to capture some behind the scene elements, specifically the process behind the show’s creative captioning as well as some short pieces to camera with the cast for use on social media.
‘Creative captions offer an opportunity for deaf and hard of hearing audiences to more fully immerse themselves in a performance. Captions can appear on stage by being integrated with a set design matching the style of the show and reflect characterisation and tone.’ – creativecaptioning.com
We filmed at Bristol’s Old Vic, where the show was opening, and interviewed the creative caption operator, JJ, as he spoke directly to the camera about ‘Wonder Boy’. We used our steadicam to allow us to follow JJ from the stage to his technical booth. He explained how creative captioning worked in the show including the fact that each character had their own font and how many caption cues there were throughout the show. This was then supported with cutaway footage of the rehearsal, showcasing the captions in context.
For TikTok and reels, we interviewed each cast member in a fun, engaging way where they signed their name to the camera and spoke about their favourite elements of the show. The idea of this was to create short form content which was also educational and teased the show whilst relating directly back to the show’s premise.
